While reading the Jan. 10 article, “Police rethink risk,” featuring Washington State Patrol Trooper Donald Gann and his recent pursuit on Highway 522, I couldn’t help but think, here we go again.
Although I did not know Michael Waterman well, I did buy appliances from him two years ago. Michael was a very helpful salesperson and a nice young man. To know his death was preventable is even more tragic. Then I read another needless pursuit had taken place and someone was hurt. Save yourself the trouble of thinking, “Oh, no one was hurt.” That is never the case when you are involved in any accident. There is always trauma to deal with.
As an unwilling participant in four rear-end collisions (none my fault) I can speak with some knowledge. It is time to put the foolish notion to rest that “hot pursuit” is the means to an end. How many more must die before our governor finally says to all law enforcement in Washington, enough, and puts an end to these needless pursuits and the pain they inflict?
