On Sept. 24, Transition Port Gardner had the pleasure of collaborating with the Volunteers of America and Snohomish County to coordinate “Moving Planet: Moving Produce — Toward A Hunger Free Everett.” The event had three aims: to bring awareness to the problem of food insecurity in our local area,
to raise money for the food bank and the Red Barn Community Farm, and to raise awareness about climate change issues.
Teams of people brought produce from the Red Barn Community Farm in Lowell to the courthouse in downtown Everett without using fossil fuel. Bicycles, back packs and baby strollers were the predominant forms of carrying produce as 75 adults and children brought 1,200 pounds of corn (from Bailey’s farm), green beans and cabbage for the food bank!
There are many local people to thank: Michael Trujillo and his friend Oggie for music, and also George Mann. Bailey’s Farm donated an entire truckload of corn. The Everett Police Department provided two supportive and helpful police to escort our parade. County Executive Aaron Reardon, Everett City Councilman Paul Roberts, and Doris Olivers of Carbon Masters gave speeches. Voxus PR helped with publicity. United Way and RSVP provided volunteers. Many local crafts people provided a cheerful and festive atmosphere at the courthouse plaza. Donating prizes for teams were: Sno-Isle Food Coop, Tulalip Resort, Bethany Christian Assembly, Firewheel Books and Beans, Aaron Wartes of Edward Jones, Snohomish County PUD and Starbucks. KSER donated many minutes of air time.
Thanks to our community for a successful and fun event!
