Although I applaud The Herald for its May 3 coverage of the Special Olympics event in Marysville, I am disappointed that the story appeared in the Local section and not the Sports section.
As a high school coach for more than 20 years, and having been involved at various levels with Special Olympics, I believe that the time, energy, devotion and passion of the Special Olympic athletes is deserving of having them recognized as the athletes they are. If anything, they represent the purest of athletic ideals: striving to improve and seeking to compete against others while maintaining the ideals of sportsmanship and teamwork.
In this day and age of the Sports section being filled with contract negotiations, athlete scandals and more, it only seems right that the page take time to truly recognize those who still compete for the love of sport.
