A few observations on the subject of Mayor Ed Hansen.
First, it is as difficult to exaggerate the fine job that he has done as mayor, as it is easy to fault him for leaving the city high and dry only five months into his new four-year term.
The city has prospered under Mayor Hansen due in no small part to his civic vision, keen fiscal management and plain hard work.
During his second term, the mayor explored the prospect of being hired as the Snohomish County PUD manager. During his campaign for a third term he also pursued the manager’s job for the Bonneville Power Administration. He nevertheless stood for re-election to his third four-year term, committing that he wanted to serve throughout that term.
Now we find that he was more serious about his undisclosed public power interests than he was about the position of trust that he campaigned for, raised money for and asked for a public vote of confidence on.
Everett is at a very important crossroads in its development, and the guy who gets big credit for such progress has just walked off the job, after publicly stating that he wanted your vote of confidence for four years – not five months.
