=Mayoral candidates must demonstrate they have plans ready to implement if elected. Everett is a municipal corporation with a 2017 budget of $332 million and nearly 1,200 employees. Our next mayor will preside over unprecedented growth and will need to balance the $65 million 5-year budget shortfall. Having heard both candidates speak, I believe Judy Tuohy is the one who understands the task at hand.
An Everett native, born and raised here, Judy understands firsthand our evolution from mill town to multifaceted, opportunity-oriented city. Judy is a veteran doer, who embodies the “bootstrap” ethic of our ancestors. The Schack Art Center is testimony to Judy’s ability to help a shared vision become a reality. Through her leadership, the Schack is a self-sustaining enterprise. These are mayoral skills.
Public safety and homelessness are both issues of concern. Judy knows the city cannot meet those needs itself, but needs to leverage the talents of the social service providers in our community, and has called for a summit of Snohomish County mayors to set a coordinated agenda. Her plan for a temporary day shelter will alleviate the burden of mental health and opioid diseases on our neighborhoods and businesses, while she works toward a long-term solutions for homelessness.
Judy has spoken of the need to gain efficiencies in city operations through the use of technology, evaluating spending priorities, and finding ways to streamline service delivery. I trust Judy to tackle the budget challenge by finding a way for the city to live within its means.
Join me in voting for Judy Tuohy!
