In recent Herald letters you have permitted two points of view regarding designing/manufacturing safety into Boeing airplanes. Truth be told, both views were skewed based on the work being done by the writers. Airplane safety is not the domain of the Machinists or the Manufacturing Engineers. Safety is the responsibility of every person involved in the design, manufacture, quality and certification of Boeing airplanes. Ultimately every person employed by Boeing, its suppliers and partners, has a stake in the airplane’s safety; it is a part of the Boeing culture.
This multi-faceted approach to safety begins with materials testing and component qualification and continues through the entire build process to final airplane certification that allows revenue flights. And airplane safety continues past initial flight certification via airline safety checks, FAA reviews and Boeing Safety Bulletins. For one group to claim a greater responsibility for airplane safety than another lessens the overall image of Boeing’s commitment to airplane safety.
