I disagree with Richard Wendt’s all-or-nothing philosophy displayed in his letter published Tuesday in The Herald (“Citizens shut out of major planning”). He states that building a 600-foot pier at Edgewater Beach will “destroy Everett’s only saltwater beach accessible by car.”
Public access to the waterfront is the top priority of the community and part of the city’s Shoreline Master Plan. At the same time, the community needs to do all that it can to retain Boeing and the thousands of jobs within our local economy. Keeping Boeing here in Everett to build the new 7E7 airplane is not a done deal at this point. The governor is willing to request $16 million to help pay for the construction of the pier. This is not an all-or-nothing scenario regarding the beach. We can have public access to the beach at Edgewater, a pier that will help retain Boeing, money from the state, and we can keep the local economy strong. Everyone wins.
