I’m responding to the Tuesday letter, “Words, deeds do aid the enemy,” which vilifies Democrats as enemies of the state.
I was blown away by the extremism of the writer’s views. He obviously cares deeply for his country. So do I. We both want to win the war on terror, if such a thing is even possible in less than two to three generations. We want the same things, yet he seems to hate me for what I believe.
I just watched a documentary about a group of Rangers stationed in Falujah called “Operation Dreamland.”
In the documentary, soldiers terrorize women and children in the dark of night. You see disillusioned young men questioning their presence in Iraq and the effectiveness of the Bush administration’s policies. I know that there are good things going on in Iraq. But let’s face it, those things happen in bigger, progressive cities that are well under the control of massive military presence, which is the only way this war can be won.
A majority of Americans feel it was wrong to go into Iraq. A member of the Bush administration now feels this way too. The global community has consistently felt this way. Therefore the world consensus, prevailing opinion, says that it was wrong to go into Iraq. But a majority doesn’t make the rules these days. So what are the minority views? Failed.
It’s time we stop holding the course with other people’s lives – American, Iraqi, English etc., and send the thousands of extra soldiers needed to do this right or get out. For every American killed it seems that 100 Iraqis die! We’re helping these people? I cannot hold my head high while this goes on.
