This letter is to correct an error in an Oct. 17 letter. The letter (“Everett events center: Math just doesn’t add up”) said “the Tacoma Sabercats, Everett’s potential rivals,” have a hockey attendance of approximately 3,800 per game. The writer concluded that Everett would have lower attendance than Tacoma.
The Sabercats are a West Coast Hockey League Team with no in-state rivals and are not “potential rivals of Everett.” The West Coast Hockey League has one team in Tacoma, Washington. The rest of this eight-team league consists of one in Idaho, one in Arizona, one in Colorado, one in Alaska and three in California. The Western Hockey League, which includes a number of potential rivals of Everett, will have 20 teams when Everett is added. Other Washington teams are located in Seattle, Spokane, and the Tri-Cities. Other natural rivals are located in Vancouver, British Columbia and Portland.
Western Hockey League attendance is very robust. The Tacoma Dome was not designed as a hockey facility and is not a particularly good venue for fans and attendance has suffered. The Everett facility will be a first-class hockey venue and will be a great facility for fans and players.
