Russia is not a friend and never really has been. They were an ally in WWII because we had a common enemy, but even before the war was over they set out to be the dominant power in the world, and the U.S. stood in their way. Decades of cold war and a nuclear arms race eventually bankrupted the country, leading to to the Soviet Union’s collapse in the early ’90s. A long history of conflict with the Russians renewed when Vladimir Putin became their leader. They even tried to convince the Chinese government to join them in 2008 when we were in a financial crisis by pushing the U.S. economy into bankruptcy, but China owned so much of our debt that our demise, financially, would hurt them as well.
These are the very same Russians that we see Trump schmoozing with in the White House. The same Russians who continue to threaten and invade their neighbors in hopes of eventually regaining some of their former territory and glory days and the same folks Donald Trump has been doing business with for many years.
Doing business with the Russians as a private citizen is not necessarily a crime. Dealing with them as a government is an entirely different matter and to hide any communications with their government could easily be criminal for obvious reasons. It’s still a communist government, one of the most corrupt governments on the face of this planet and any dealings with them can have world shaking consequences.
There’s way more to this story, folks. And the Trumpsters are lawyering up, but as Trump is fond of reminding us, “If your not guilty why take the 5th?” All Americans, regardless of their politics, need to know what that story is.
