A Monday letter writer comments that liberals haven’t given credit to President Bush for successfully negotiating with North Korea, claiming a “double standard.” Fair enough. The writer fails to note, however, that in returning to talking with Korea, Mr. Bush finally gave up on his rejection of the process started by President Clinton.
When Bush came to office, his foreign policy amounted to reversing anything Clinton had done. In the case of Korea, that led to their making more bombs. It wasn’t until Bush resumed what Clinton had begun that progress was made. Incidentally, the successful operation in Afganistan was based on a plan developed by the CIA under Clinton.
One can only imagine where we’d be had they kept their eyes on that ball. Iraq, with all its tragic failures, is pure Bush, all the way. You wanna talk double standard? There it is.
