Regarding Thursday’s article on fake lawns: Have people learned nothing from Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring”? Read it.
Real yards provide birds with much needed protein from insects, worms, etc. When you drive the birds away, heaven help you. The flying insects are going to love the area when they can bite to their heart’s content, spreading disease.
Real grass produces oxygen. You just know artificial turf is out-gassing. Not just into yards with fake lawns, but into the atmosphere for the rest of us.
Can you imagine the toxins that go into making artificial turf, and what is released into our air and water during the process? And the gas to ship it to market?
So you think you are saving money? Just stop fertilizing — can’t people see how dangerous and counterproductive that is? If you fertilize, grass will grow faster, then you have to mow more often. Can you imagine the toxins that are produced just by making fertilizer? Not to mention the packaging, transport and the toxic runoff after it’s used. And there’s the energy required to run a lawnmower and the fumes produced. So what if you don’t have the perfect yard. At least you’ll stay healthy enough to enjoy it. You can save money the environmentally friendly way: Stop fertilizing, stop watering grass, mow less.
Wake up people! Saving money on fertilizing, watering and mowing is not the driving issue promoting artificial grass — it’s money, money, money — for the suppliers!
You’d be better off putting your money into growing your own organic vegetables, and raising your own chickens for organic eggs.
