My husband and I look forward each summer to attending the Evergreen State Fair. It is obvious to us that a lot of hard work goes into putting on this big production. They seem to always be looking for ways to improve the fair. In the last five or so years they had even brought in a different carnival. This new carnival group seemed to have higher all-around standards than the previous carnival. We were pleased with the assortment of games and decent prizes.
But on Aug. 25, our day at the fair did not end on a pleasant note. Every year we love to play all the midway games and we usually drop about $150 playing just for the fun of it. (Any prizes won go to the grandkids) This time we were surprised to find that when we played one game, the workers “accidentally” gave us back the wrong change on three separate occasions. We would point it out and they quickly made it right, but after the third time we figured it wasn’t accidental and moved on. We were at another game when I gave the man my last $20. He gave me back $3. When I told him I had given him a $20 (remember, I had already been through this three times at the other game), he proceeded to tell me that I had only given him a $5. I insisted that I had given him a $20. to which he waved around the wad of bills in front of my face saying he didn’t even have a $20 in his hand. I then reached up and pulled down his hand to reveal my $20 folded and “palmed” where it would not be seen. Faced with that, he then had the nerve to ask me what I wanted! I told him I wanted my $18 change.
After playing out that one game, I reported all of this to whom I suppose was the carnival games manager, but I am not comfortable with this. What a sad situation, that a few dishonest people could make you question the whole carnival.
To all the hard-working people who worked so hard to put on this fair, thank you. At least we have the wonderful memories of corn on the cob and onion burgers to wipe out the bad taste the carnival left us with.
