I’m afraid that I must be the voice in the minority and question Valley General’s request for a nearly threefold increase in levied (tax) assessment. Other medical providers in our area, including Providence Hospital and others are privately owned non-profit organizations which seem to thrive without help from the taxpayer. Group Health will be paying employees a bonus next month. My question is simple — why are they doing well in the same fiscal/geographic arena as Valley General, or better yet what is Valley General doing wrong? Don’t mind my skepticism but it appears to me the Board of Commissioners wants more money to continue following the same inefficient path but on a larger scale. I would suggest that they do their homework, find the real source of the problem and get their house in order before asking for a taxpayer bailout. By the way, if those of you who rent may think it won’t affect you — you are wrong. Your landlord will pass the increase on to you in the form of a rent increase.
