In regard to our EMS levy election, I would like to thank the Monday letter writer for the question of where Fire District 4 got the money for the training site and the improvements. The answer is simple. In 1991 the fire district passed a special bond issue for the development of a training site. As for using the money to fund paramedics, it would be unethical and illegal for Fire District 4 to use the money for anything other than the training site.
A Saturday letter brought up the issue of the state budget surplus. While the state government seems to have plenty of money, fire districts receive no state or county funding. Our sources of revenue come from local property taxes and ambulance transport fees. It may or may not be a good system, but it is the current system in which the Fire District operates. Unlike with the state, the letter writer and the citizens of Fire District 4 have local control and choices.
Fire District 4 feels very strongly about having an open dialogue concerning the EMS and paramedic issue. I am willing to meet with anyone who would like to know more about the current EMS program or any other fire district issue. Your comments and questions are welcome.
