Larry Simoneaux’s column on Dec. 28 (“Enforce gun laws already on the books before passing more”) hit the nail right on the head. We have enough gun laws on the books. In the subsequent letter by Sens. Jeanne Kohl-Welles and Adam Kline, D-Seattle, they stated that Larry overlooked a key point in his column. They indicate that semi-automatic weapons are just as lethal as automatics, which were banned in the 1930s because police were being gunned down by gangsters.
These two senators overlooked a key point here — the police were gunned down by gangsters — not by law-abiding citizens. I doubt that Al Capone and other gangsters in the 1930s turned in their automatic weapons when that law went into effect.
When someone uses any type of weapon in a crime, toss them in jail and throw away the key. Enacting new laws banning semi-automatic weapons will not keep them out of the hands of gangsters. I don’t own an assault weapon and have never cared to, but the gangster that owns one (or any type of weapon) and is thinking about breaking into my home or business doesn’t know that — unless their bill passes.
