Friday’s paper is peppered with articles, pictures, op-eds, etc., honoring our veterans. The accolades are sincerely appreciated, and on behalf of my fellow brothers and sisters in the Armed Forces, we thank you and we are honored to be of service to our fellow countrymen.
The other side of the picture that is seldom made known to many is the “dark” picture of veterans literally begging for help from the same government that he/she unselfishly served. Many veterans came home physically and mentally unable to function normally and often denied help or barely getting help because of bureaucratic red tape. Jobs were lost when we came home and we seldom receive a cost of living raise in our pensions; now the government is planning to charge us more for the health benefits that was promised to be free for us.
Isn’t it about time that our fellow citizens start reminding our representatives in Congress that appreciation for our sacrifices is not by treating us like second-class citizens. We like to live in this grateful nation with pride, but we cannot achieve that when the government itself is preventing us. Are we asking too much from the government we sacrificed for??
