Recently I had an educational experience. I walked to the market in a hurry to buy one item, taking only the grocery money (not any personal funds) and a much-worn cloth shopping bag. On the way back I cut through the Everett Mall and decided, on the spur of the moment to get some steamed veggies to share with my sister as part of our lunch. After I ordered them, I wondered if I had enough left to pay for them. As I counted the change a young woman behind me stepped up and laid two dollar bills beside the cash register and the clerk picked them up immediately. I was surprised and protested but she said, “That’s ok, it’s on me” or something like that. I had money at home and was embarrassed, but didn’t want to make a big thing out of it with several people looking on. So I thanked the lady again and left. As I walked away I realized what she had seen – an elderly woman in very plain clothes, no make-up, no jewelry and a worn cloth shopping bag. Perhaps she thought I was homeless.
The Food Bank will get an extra donation this month in gratitude to an anonymous citizen who did good quietly when she perceived a need. I am proud of our citizens.
