Foolish to help birds? No, that is caring thing to do

I want to extend my support and admiration for the group that is frightening ducks to save them from being killed by hunters (“Their aim is to miss,” news story, Oct. 21). They may not be able to save many lives, but for every life they save, that is one less bird that has to suffer and die.

Bill Hebner of the Department of Fish and Wildlife says what these people are doing looks foolish and he hopes they don’t shoot people.

First of all, it is a well-known statistic that one of the hallmarks of murderers is that a majority of them started out torturing and killing animals. So, as for shooting people, hunters need to beware of each other, not of people who value and love all life. Second of all, what do you call sneaking around in the woods with a huge rifle so you can kill a helpless, unarmed duck? I call that both foolish and cowardly.

When I was a little girl my father took me to the lake to feed the ducks. He taught me compassion and concern for all life. Hunters teach their children that violence, killing and inflicting torture and death to harmless creatures is a form of pleasure and entertainment. Which of these do you think is foolish?
