In response to your article about the possible closing of the Everett mail processing facility, I have trouble believing this is the best option. As a casual observer, I figured out that this is a major hub in the postal system. It represents a huge volume of work to be distributed to other units, which are probably operating at near capacity.
There is a limit to how much mail can be processed through a given floor space in a given amount of time. I don’t think that once the Everett facility is closed the remaining post offices will handle the volume of mail as efficiently as Everett does. If the real reason is cost of the operation, I suggest that the largest users of the mail pay the increase.
I know our first class postage rates are due to go up in January or shortly after that. What about the bulk rate customers? I think that their rates are artificially low. I doubt any other company would take their weekly piles of mail to everyone’s house at a rate as low as the post office charges. I often wonder why their rate is not closer to the first class rate we pay when we mail a letter or card.
