Unfortunately a few leaders in the state Republican Party, led by Dino Rossi, turned out to be extremely sore losers. They cannot accept the fact that they fairly and legally lost the gubernatorial race and are grasping at straws at the expense of Washington taxpayers.
They took the sadly predictable partisan approach, trying to dig up dirt, rather than do the honorable thing and accept the result. They had a chance to be graceful, but they have chosen to be spiteful, thus throwing away another opportunity to unite the state rather than divide it. What a miserable statement they are making about themselves. What a poor example they are setting for our children.
I was at sea with the United States Navy for the 1980 election. Because of what we learned after the 2000 election I sadly came to the conclusion that my vote was probably never counted – at a time when I think it should have counted the most. Obviously this is not a new problem, and it needs to be corrected, but it is not a good excuse to rerun this election.
It would be much better for the state and its citizens if the small group of well-financed sore losers accepted the election and moved on.
Because of this election, it is abundantly clear that the newly elected state and county officials need to insure the election rules and method of voting are the same and secure in all counties. There is no need for different counties to have different ways to vote or count votes. This should be a state priority.
The only practical answer is that this state must aggressively move to safe and secure electronic voting in the next two to four years. The money not spent on a revote could go a long way toward paying for the needed systems.
