Thank you to Washington’s educators, staff and administrators for an impeccable first school day.
At the end of every summer, Washington kids put on their backpacks, get on the school bus, and file into classrooms across our state. For many parents the first school day is a much-needed morning to themselves. For teachers, staff and administrators, the first day back means helping over one million students transition smoothly into the new school year. I’ve always been impressed by the strength and dedication of our school employees, but this year, they went above and beyond.
We should all support education. Teachers don’t only show children how to be good students but compassionate and responsible citizens. Our students have so much potential. In school, they learn to believe in their talents, work hard and accomplish incredible things.
I grew up in rural Louisiana; my school was a little one-story wood building. Whenever I speak with students, I show them a picture of that little schoolhouse and remind them, “it’s not where you come from, it’s where you’re going.” School is where students learn they can do anything they set their minds to if they put in the effort.
On Sept. 4, I had the privilege of driving around the 44th Legislative District to watch bus drivers, custodians, teachers, paraeducators, administrators, principals and superintendents flawlessly usher in the new school year. Working in a school isn’t easy, but each of these individuals give their time and energy to build a brighter tomorrow for our students and state.
The future of our world is in our classrooms. The amazing people who dedicate their lives to supporting the next generation deserve our thanks and a sincere congratulations for this terrific first day back to school.
Sen. John Lovick, D-Mill Creek, represents the 44th Legislative District.
