In the Fourth of July’s Herald there was a full double page ad containing quotes from many of our founding fathers, past Presidents and other famous people declaring their beliefs in a Christian God. It doesn’t take a giant leap to understand what message was being put forth and we’ve all heard the similar arguments and comments that this is a Christian nation, founded and led by God fearing Christian men.
This all sounds so glorious till one sheds their tinted looking glass and realizes that even though these great men were Christians they were also very deliberate to separate their religious views from the new government they were creating. Obviously their intent was not to suppress religion(s) but rather to keep anyone from using the power of this new nation to dictate a state religion or how we should behave based on ones beliefs; see actions of several Republican controlled states recently. One man’s pursuit of happiness may not be another’s but to paraphrase; who’s to judge anyway, or throw that first stone?
One more tidbit to chew on while you’re espousing the great Christian values this country was supposedly founded on; when they had a chance to abolish the evils of slavery they conspicuously kicked the can down the road so to speak, ultimately leading to the Civil War, then “free but separate” and ghettos. Paraphrasing again; when I was hungry you fed me not, when I was ill you cared for me not… and what you did not do for the least, you did not for me. Better pray over that sanctimonious tea that if and when Jesus returns He doesn’t start somewhere here in America. Oh look, I can see Heaven from here…
