Religion has nothing to do with patriotism or an individual’s value to society. Religious affiliation isn’t an indication of whether or not a person will commit crimes against society or pay their taxes. The most devout among us commit as much crime as the least or non-religious citizens.
Some of the same senators and congressmen that voted to add “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954, and voted to put “In God we trust” on paper money in 1955, opposed the civil rights movement. What about “with liberty and justice for all?”
The pompous and self-righteous are simply that, nothing more. Luckily for us our founding fathers were smarter than contemporary Americans in recognizing the problems inherent in the mixing of church and state. It isn’t the business of our government to concern itself with the beliefs of the citizenry. Afghanistan is one nation under one official idea of god. Isn’t that enough for the world to deal with?
