On Thanksgiving evening I saw a gentleman on a national business news show (CNN’s “Moneyline”) make a comment that the airline industry “business model” would not get a good grade from any business school. I would like to offer another perspective on this public comment.
As an engineering manager in the commercial airplane business, and a person of the flying public – who still enjoys looking out the window at our beautiful American country – I offer this: Our U.S. airline transportation system is the finest in the world. That’s true from the airplanes, to the people who design, build, maintain, fly, operate, attend and secure us during our travels. Maybe the importance of this business model is not about the Wall Street dollar, but about providing everyday people with the opportunity to get together with family and friends all across this world, in a timely, efficient and safe travel. Doing this at a price most people can afford, and having the finest professionals, equipment and training keeping us safe may not be a good business model, but it more than serves our nation and truly offers one of our greatest freedoms.
