Section 215 of the Patriot Act will enable government watchdogs to be privy to library and bookstore records as to what patrons and customers are reading. It is said to be needed to combat terrorism.
When legislators requested information about section 215 of the Patriot Act, they were told it was confidential information and could not be divulged because of security concerns. I think this is in direct contradiction to our most basic civil rights.
The Freedom to Read Protection Act of 2003, introduced by Independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont and others, is an effort to defend against this invasion of privacy.
I hope our elected officials are paying attention and will support the Freedom to Read Protection Act of 2003.
