As a Mason, I am disappointed that the school district leaders in Arlington canceled the recent cornerstone laying ceremony (news article, Sept. 26 “Arlington school kills cornerstone”). This is not a religious ritual, but an inspiring tradition. Brother George Washington personally conducted the Masonic cornerstone laying for the White House. Freemasons championed democratic government, public education and religious tolerance long before we took these freedoms for granted.
Freemasonry is a wonderful fraternity dedicated to “making good men better” through the practice of “brotherly love, relief and truth.” It is not a religion, but a worldwide fraternity that stresses religious tolerance. Our members practice many different religions including the wide range of Christian theologies. I am Buddhist. By longstanding tradition, we do not discuss religion or politics in our lodges.
I encourage the public (and the school boards) to better educate themselves about Masonry and its continuing contributions to our communities. Visit freemason-wa.org and masonicinfo.com and their links. Learn why Freemasons are rightfully proud of their ancient fraternity.
