I guessed I must have blinked — when did May 1 become a day of protest, vandalism, assaulting our police officers? It use to be a day of hanging May baskets filled with flowers on your neighbor’s doorknob, knocking, running away and thinking you were hiding as you watched the smile on their faces as they retrieved the basket. There was the May pole, flowers in your hair, laughter and for those with faith-celebrating the Mother Mary, who only wants peace on earth. To the principal in Bellingham that closed school for a “sun” day — you’re awesome! We need more happy stories like that!
