The Monday “Street Smarts” column by Melissa Slager was great. It brought to mind the idea to eliminate all self-service gas stations so that would require low-skilled employment. As I saw in Oregon, the homeless we see on the street corner and those teens in need of some employment, could have a job. Instead of making a law against them we make a law to help them. Why not? To protect our home values we make zoning laws and building codes so that housing is more expensive and we can get a higher price. It is the same principle, a law to help others.
Why not create jobs without increasing government, in either case laws are being made. Are we going to make bad law to hurt helpless people or make good laws to elevate and help people? In my opinion, opponents of this idea would appear to be more concerned about making sure “those people” are kept in their place, than they are about big government regulations. We’re talking about pennies and the way stations appear to work, the cost of doing business is taken care of by the gas company. The operator receiving “X” cents per gallon to run the station with the real profits coming from the goods in the store. Let’s help our neighbors off the street by passing a law to eliminate self-service gas stations.
