Fuller, Hawkins in Gold Bar

Voters in Gold Bar will have two energetic, well-qualified candidates on the Nov. 4 ballot for mayor if they advance the incumbent, Steven Fuller, and Colleen Hawkins in the Sept. 16 primary.

Fuller, a former city council member, was appointed mayor when the late Ken Foster resigned for health reasons. Before joining the council, Fuller was a member of the town’s planning commission, where he gained a good grasp of growth issues.

If elected to a full term, Fuller would work to plan for some commercial/industrial growth along U.S. 2, and small, mom-and-pop businesses away from the highway on the north end of town. He also said he has worked to make sure ordinances are enforced uniformly, without favoritism.

Hawkins, a planning commission member for the past three years, believes city government has become separated from citizens, and that city hall and the city council must become more open and accessible. She says she is a fiscal conservative who would lead an honest look at where to cut the city budget.

Candidate Jerry Wood, who runs a coffee business in town, says he would provide a needed morale boost to city staff. He probably would make a good boss, but doesn’t have the same level of background in important planning issues as his opponents.
