While reading HeraldNet, I came upon the editorial “A slow farewell as a North Cascades glacier melts,” The Herald, Aug. 20. As I read it I could feel a pain in my heart that one of the most beautiful national parks, that I have had the pleasure of visiting, was slowly slipping away. I remember seeing the glory and magnitude of North Cascades, and I cannot imagine a world where we don’t have these amazing natural features. But that is becoming the world we live in.
Climate change is destroying our forests, glaciers, water and air. Human activity is ruining the places that we rely on to escape the hustle and bustle of our cities, jobs, and lives. But we have the chance to change and protect them. We need to act on climate change if we want our children to be able to visit the places we love.
We need to do everything we can to protect these places, and a great way to do that is to fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund. The Land and Water Conservation Fund, or LWCF, protects our national historic sites, local baseball fields, and national parks, like North Cascades National Park. This program is hugely successful, but it almost never receives full funding. We Sen. Patty Murray to vote to fund LWCF, so that our beautiful places will be protected.
