I wanted to comment on the Oct. 6 article by Steve Gushee regarding ridding the world of fundamentalism (“It’s time to rid the world of all fundamentalism,” Religion page).
I am really disappointed that The Herald would even publish such a bigoted commentary. True Christian fundamentalists believe the Lord Jesus Christ came, “to seek and to save that which was lost,” (Luke 19:10). We are to follow His example, not judge the world. He will come back – we don’t know when – to judge, but that time has not yet come. It is He who will be the judge of those that have already died and those still alive at His coming.
We are never told to fight or kill those that do not believe. He loves the world and died to save us from our sins. John 3:17 says “For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him.”
Steve Gushee’s thinking is flawed. He is judging a whole group of people by a few nuts. Just because someone calls himself a fundamentalist does not mean he is one. I know a few hundred fundamental Christians and not one of them would ever condone bombing an abortion clinic, even though they think abortion is wrong.
