Kudos to Tom Nickerson for telling it like it is, (Feb. 6 Letters, “Don’t even think about raising sales tax”). Taxpayers voted for the state lottery because it was labeled as money for schools. While everyone voted for education, our elected officials voted to use the money to pump up the general fund!
As a result, everyone has been swamped with countless school levies. Schools need more and more money while the average family is forced to make cuts. Let’s talk about waste. In the 1950s some school districts built “state of the art schools.” In the 1990s those “outdated” schools were razed so that new “state of the art” schools could be built on the sites. Huge signs were posted on those sites boasting another century of excellence. Are some school district employees actually worth six-figure annual salaries? Ever wonder why foreign students are two to three years ahead of our students? Want to take a guess about the amount of academic funds diverted into the countless athletic programs? Perhaps it is time for thorough audits of schools’ budgets. Those in charge should be held accountable.
