I see where Rep. Bill Hinkle can’t wait to introduce a bill in the special session, further changing Initiative 134. (Saturday article, “Legislator challenges fundraising law.”) We passed that bill in 1992 by a 70 percent vote. I do not understand, with our state so far in debt, why Rep. Hinkle doesn’t have some other measures in mind.
The special session will cost all taxpayers in our state money. I know I do not want to waste my tax dollars in a special session because of the whining coming out of Attorney General Rob McKenna’s office. Current law is current law. It’s funny that some laws are OK on the federal level, some OK on the state level, but there’s always a special need to change them when certain people don’t like the current law.
The campaign season is going to be painful and long for all of us. This money-raising issue is seemingly on the front burner when our broke state needs all of the attention of our lawmakers. School budgets, transportation problems, sick elderly people and the homeless could all use some consideration but somehow changing an initiative is more important? I wish for every $2 raised by politicians, $1 would go into a fund to help the less fortunate. This upcoming special session should dedicate all of its attention on our state and get that business done and end the session. Worry about special requests from other politicians later.
