I cannot begin to describe my delight while reading Diana Hefley’s story about the Everett Police going after aggressive drivers (“Aggressive drivers targeted,” Saturday). I am so very sick of these individuals (of all ages and gender) who feel their time is simply too valuable to be wasted obeying traffic laws.
It is way past time to crack down on these self-serving people and I propose a simple solution that will not cost taxpayers more money and will provide a real incentive to our law officers to become “aggressive” toward chronic offenders – commissions. Give each officer, say, 10 percent of every $101 ticket they write, and this would apply to off-duty personnel too. Once the offenders have gone to court or mailed in the fine, a percentage is put into special accounts and paid monthly. There could even be bonuses for the most tickets written.
Just imagine, no more need for special grants or increases in taxes to fund police protection, and the roads ought to be a whole lot safer in a hurry. Hit ‘em where it hurts. Keep up the good work!
