Thank you for the excellent commentary from Sheriff John Lovick on the importance of investing in programs that prevent child abuse. (Saturday, “More focus needed on prevention.”) Sheriff Lovick and scores of other law enforcement officials in our state have been carrying this message to policymakers in Olympia and Washington, D.C., for several years.
Most recently, more than 140 police chiefs, sheriffs and prosecuting attorneys (including several from Snohomish County) signed a letter to Congress in support of the kinds of investments in home visiting that Sheriff Lovick described in his commentary.
Closer to home, our state’s top cops have helped convince the Legislature and governor to spare these programs from the budget ax. As Sheriff Lovick stated, we have a “moral imperative to prevent the abuse and neglect of children.” It is an approach to crime prevention that we must continue to increase.
