The report that the Congress has once again refused to deny themselves a cost of living increase doesn’t really surprise us (“Congress votes to accept $4,900 pay increase,” Dec. 8). Instead they have voted to accept a 3.4 percent increase, reportedly worth some $4,900 per year. But they did not forget the folks back home – we received our annual notification of our Social Security increases today also. In my case the 2.6 percent cost of living increase amounted to $36 per month, or $432 per year, less than 9 percent of the congressional increase!
I suppose that life inside the beltway is somewhat more expensive than out here in the hinterlands. But an explanation of the way in which COLAs are computed for each group might be enlightening – particularly why they are computed differently.
