Good riddance, 2009

Don’t be a hater: Americans might not agree on much, but nearly three-quarters of U.S. residents said in a recent poll that 2009 was a bad year, with 42 percent calling it “very bad.”

However, results of the survey may have been skewed. Poll takers admitted they asked their questions after respondents had watched an episode of MTV’s “Jersey Shore.”

  • No drinking from the carton: Following a study that involved 36 new mothers, a New York children’s hospital found that breast milk properly stored in a refrigerator has a shelf life of four days without risk of bacterial contamination or loss of nutritional value .

    Research officials said, however, that it would not be necessary for nursing mothers to get a tattoo that said “Best if used before … .”

  • Don’t know much about history: On this date in 1759, Arthur Guinness founded his brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin, Ireland.

    On the same day, Guinness was besieged by a long line of pub customers demanding that he count as they hopped on pogo sticks, stuffed telephone booths and ate hundreds of pickled eggs.
