The Saturday guest commentary about the government trying to bankrupt the post office was very troubling. (“Fix pre-funding mess to save USPS.”) Not mentioned was that the post office’s political problems started when they unionized. The worst mortal sin to a Republican is to join a labor union. And a union that wins concessions from the government is worse yet. Republicans would close the PO and fire everybody, then resurrect it in a non-union form.
Unionized school teachers are being attacked in much the same way with charter schools. Repubs can see only the evils of featherbedding and seniority, and think that hundreds of incompetent union workers would be fired tomorrow if they couldn’t hide behind their unions. And that union teachers are all closet commies who corrode good American students’ patriotism and convince them to become Democrats. Hogwash. People join unions when they feel they have been poorly-used or fired for no good reason. The truth is we got by paying nurses and teachers, and PO workers too little and too-low benefits for years. Now we want to go back to the “good-old-days.” We, in truth, get good service from all of these, and the Repubs are trying to make political hay out of burning them on their pyre of laws.
