During last week’s Republican debate, Donald Trump referenced how “well-endowed” he is. This comment was offensive and wrong. Language of this kind is not befitting for a person running for president of the United States, and yet another reminder of the disgrace Trump would bring to this office. Candidates should discuss issues of policy, rather than making grossly inappropriate personal statements. It is remarkable to me that even after this unsuitable remark, no one had the courage to put a stop to it. A true leader will not allow our national politics to be degraded in such a way, and a true leader should definitely not agree to support such a candidate. What else will Trump be allowed to say before members of his party will stand up to this bully?
This incident is an embarrassment to our country in the eyes of the world. As a teacher, we educators believe in modeling appropriate behavior for our students and providing them with the tools they need to stand up for what is right, even when few other people are doing it. This includes standing up to bullies when we see them treating others poorly. Trump has shown us that he will do anything to attract media attention, but what is even more disturbing to me is the number of American people who accept what he is saying. He does not represent the values of all Americans, live up to our highest ideals, or serve as a good role model for our youth. Isn’t this something we want the leader of our country to do? Why is he continually allowed a platform to degrade our country and political system? When will the Republican Party and others in a position of power stand up to him? This type of rhetoric is dishonorable and the citizens of America deserve better.
