Sunday morning I spotted a big, bold headline in the Herald: “Report clears Lynnwood mayor.” Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the headline had absolutely nothing to do with the actual article! First of all, the report had a rather tight focus, and pretty much ignored most of the issues mentioned in the article.
Secondly, there was the word, “inconclusive,” which was used more than once in the article. Seems to me that “inconclusive” only means that there wasn’t enough hard evidence to hang the man. “Inconclusive” doesn’t clear anyone of anything. And finally, The Herald relied on City Council member Ted Hikel to summarize the situation. Now there is an unbiased, reliable opinion to hang your hat on.
The article did mention the Gough’s so-called leadership cost 30 good people their jobs, caused a $22.4 million deficit, and caused taxes and fees in Lynnwood to skyrocket. The report didn’t clear him of any of that. I didn’t even spot the word “inconclusive” in that part of the article. His mother must be so proud.
