In regard to the April 18 letter, “Yet another power-eating box”: The writer needs to remember it’s not Comcast (or any other cable provider) that’s forcing anybody to go digital. The switch from analog to digital is a government decision. Come June, you’ll need to have a digital box to get channels above channel 29, anyway. Comcast is simply ahead of the curve on the digital transition. Now when it comes to power consumption, there’s always going to be a draw on power — especially when it comes to home entertainment.
Any television, DVD player, VCR, cable box, etc., has a draw on power as long as it’s plugged in. They need to have a power source so when the power button is pressed on your remote, the device will actually turn on. The simple solution would be to unplug everything, but that would prove to be quite annoying over time. Now if you have a solution for Comcast or any other cable service provider on using a more “green” cable box — please let them know. I’m sure you’d make a lot of people’s day if they could save a few bucks a month on their energy bill. Let’s hear it!
