This letter is written to thank Robert Covert and all the wonderful members of the Everett Lions Club for contributing a computer and talking Russian-English Dictionary to one of my students.
Yelena is a very bright young lady from Russia. She lost her sight due to a brain tumor, but is determined to learn as much and as quickly as possible to make up for being out of school for the past five years. She came to Cascade High School last February with limited language, Braille and computer skills. Because of generous people like the Lions Club, Yelena has acquired a talking dictionary and computer at home. She says that the computer “has given me freedom.” She is no longer trapped within four walls but can go out and meet people and learn about the world through the use of this computer.
As a teacher of the blind, I know what type of freedom a computer can bring to a person with a visual impairment. Not having funds enough to gain such equipment truly restricts such an individual even more.
I cannot thank Robert Covert and the Everett Lion’s Club enough for their generosity. Having such access has truly given her wings.
Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts.
