He taught us all much more than winning

It has been years since I have seen Coach Mike Lowery. He may not even remember me, but I will always remember him and the impact he made on my life.

Coach Lowery always strived for the most from his athletes. He would get fired up, he was demanding in a passionate and expressive way. He did this because he cared. He was always more interested how we acted than whether we won. From him I learned that true success is in surpassing yourself, not your competition. I remember vividly Coach talking about “potential” and Coach Lowery’s name will always be synonymous for this view on the conduct of athletes in his endless mantra, “Have class.”

When I think of how much time that coaches give up from their families and other pursuits to devote time to an often-thankless job, I can only describe it as a sacrifice and a labor of love.

I know that because of the coaching I had from Mike Lowery and the dedicated teacher/coaches in Marysville schools I have learned to strive for more, overcome adversity, and to never give up. Learning these lessons has had more of a benefit to my life as I raise my children and serve my community than the winning of any game or championship.
