I’m writing to thank you and Diana Hefley for her wonderful Oct. 28 article “How April’s life was saved” — a very positive, uplifting look at the good things that good people do under the most difficult circumstances. It’s a “take” on such situations that we don’t often see in newspaper reporting (or any other media, for that matter). Diana’s reporting on law and justice matters is both objective and factual but also even-handed and non-inflammatory — journalistic professionalism at its best.
As I was reading Diana’s article it brought to mind one of my most favorite lines from a movie — In “Starman,” Jeff Bridges, playing a gentle visiting alien, comments on what he sees as our (human beings’) best feature: “You are at your best when things are at their worst.”
It’s such a positive comment on the basic goodness of our humanity that one can’t help but feel like we human beings have a real chance of surviving “ourselves,” when you hear him say it — and Diana’s journalism is very much touched by this positive look at ourselves, even when we seem to be at our worst.
I look forward to seeing more of Diana’s good work in The Herald. Thank you so much for having her as part of your staff.
