Regarding the Tuesday letter “Always plenty to be proud of,” which denigrates Michelle Obama for her comments “Let me tell you something — for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country.” I am sorry, but it takes more than the things listed, like a U.S. hockey team winning a gold medal in 1980, and assistance to Indonesia and Southeast Asia, to make me really proud of my country.
When we put a stop to corporate and government corruption, stop the war designed to fatten the wallets of big corporations at the expense of our service people, provide adequate services to the elderly, young and needy, and educate our children to compete intellectually in the world, then I will again feel proud of my country. Check out the amount of money spent each day on the war or sent to help other countries and translate that into the services that could be provided here at home. We are a nation in debt, with an ever-growing deficit. Do you know that we are borrowing money from China and other countries and that this country is totally in debt to foreign interests?
It is time for a change, a leader who has not been part of the problem like McCain and Clinton. I do not know if Obama can accomplish all that needs to be done, but he is giving hope to us, a breath of fresh air in a stale environment where everything is run by a handful of the very most powerful.
Sure, the establishment will bring out their big bucks against him in the next months; they have the power and money to do it. We, the people, must see through the trash talk. We want America back as an America of and for the people.
