Her spending ways guarantee tax increases

I’m troubled by your endorsement of incumbent Gov. Christine Gregoire. At the risk of sounding like a conservative who blames liberal media bias for all the ills in the universe, let me point out a few things from your editorial:

“… although Rossi doesn’t believe her, we do when she says she has no interest in raising taxes to balance this budget.”

That is a remarkable leap of faith, considering her record. Under her leadership, spending has increased by one-third. She fought hard to increase the gas tax by 9 cents, and in some areas the sales tax is almost 10 percent. Now with a huge deficit looming, can she continue her drunken sailor spending without raising taxes even more? I’m sorry, but the math doesn’t work.

“She supports bringing a four-year public university campus to Snohomish County, and has helped move the issue faster than most thought it could.”

Most of who? This was a hot issue in 2004, and where are we now? We have a Democrat governor, a Democrat-controlled state House and Senate, a Democrat Snohomish County executive, and a Democrat-controlled Snohomish County Council. With all those Democrats working together, you’d think that at least a site would be chosen, prepped, with foundations for buildings going up. But nothing has happened.

Perhaps I’m expecting too much, but it would be a tremendous leap of faith to vote for Gregoire based on the reasons given in your endorsement. The Democrats have held the governor’s mansion for 24 years. Its time for some new blood and fresh ideas.
