The article on the front page of the June 26 Herald (“Public employee unions assess damage of Supreme Court ruling,”) is the quintessential example of why conservatives roll their eyes at your writing. It is also an example of why your readership and revenue are declining. The article, by Jerry Cornfield spoke at length about the Supreme Court decision to ban public unions from the forced collection of dues from non-members.
As written, it would have been perfectly appropriate if it had appeared on the opinion page, but was not appropriate as a “news” article. The commentary totally ignored the primary reason why the court found as it did, that public sector unions may not use non-member contributions to give to their Democrat pals without the members’ consent, it violates First Amendment rights. Instead, Cornfield blathered on about representation fees, exposing his political bias as well as that of his employers. A part of the decision also banned a new “opt out” law that Gov. Jay Inslee got the Legislature to pass this last session.
The problem is that The Herald is probably oblivious to a conservatives point of view, almost all of their stories and headlines are written from a liberal point of view and they wouldn’t understand how to write a straight news story if their life depended on it.
