I am writing with great concern over the lack of coverage in our local paper on the medical malpractice crisis in our state. I was one of 900 medical providers rallying in Seattle May 29 to bring public awareness to this growing emergency. Busloads of us from Everett went for the midday event without any coverage locally. I noticed that your paper carried front-page stories and photos of Boeing workers rallying to get the 7E7 business for our state. How attractive will Everett be without quality, accessible health care?
Liability coverage is a concern to every business in the state and a make-or-break issue in health care. Jackpot awards drive health-care costs sky-high. Jackpot awards may render some health care completely unavailable. Already, obstetricians and neurosurgeons are finding coverage difficult to obtain at any price. Without coverage, they close.
A solution is possible. Several states have already successfully reformed liability laws and are now experiencing more affordable, accessible health care. It is time for the state of Washington to recognize the problem and time for The Herald to cover the crisis.
