Well, I’ll be darned. The Herald breaks the story that the Bush administration’s line about huge caches of weapons in Iraq may have been a pretext for going to war! (“U.S. credibility on line in search for weapons,” June 12, Opinion). Good sleuthing, you guys. The rest of the world, and a third of Americans, knew this four months ago but we were drowned out by all the “with us or against us” frenzy, much of which was performed by The Herald. I’m glad to see that you have finally caught up.
Now, you should be asking a few more questions. Why was this lie perpetrated upon us? Some say that it was a distraction technique, since our economy back here in the states is sliding into the toilet, along with education and health care. Some say that a core of conservatives close to the president have designs on controlling the Middle East. Some say it was about oil. Some say Bush just wanted a checkmark in the win column as he headed into campaign season. I believe that there is more than a bit of truth in all of these theories. Two more questions should be asked about the deception of the American people: How do you feel about having been snowed? And what are we going to do about it?
